Conservation Challenge….

Spring is here!  It’s that time of the year, when you drive or walk down the road and notice all of the “STUFF” along the roadsides.  The WI Chapter of the SWCS would like to challenge all of our members to adopt a section of road near your home, land that you may rent, hunt, farm or a place that you visit on a regular basis.  By participating in this small act of conservation, you are benefiting your community and the environment.  We also want to thank all those already adopting their own section of road!

UW—Stevens Point Student Chapter Report

The student members of SWCS made the year a productive and educational one for the organization.  We conducted and are in the process of initiating different research and volunteer projects.  The Horicon Marsh in Dodge County has been the focus of a project for over 10 years.  Students travel to the marsh and take core soil samples then process them back in the lab.  The goal is to determine nutrient levels in the marsh and map them with GIS.  We have also initiated a culvert project working with the WDNR DOT liaison in Waupaca County.  This project will include monitoring and collecting data on existing road culverts in order to provide information on their condition.  The information will then be compiled and given to the DNR and DOT for further analysis.  The club also held our annual banquet with the student chapter of the American Water Resources Association in February.  Here students were offered the opportunity to meet and discuss issues with peers and faculty in a socially educational environment.  The banquet featured Jason and Giselle Kauffeld, who discussed their travels around the world and offered insight to students and faculty about global environmental issues.  College Days for Kids, is one of the organizations fundraisers during the year.  Usually taking place in the spring, it gives club members an opportunity to practice some hands on education with 6th graders from the surrounding local area.  College Days for Kids provides students with skills that might not otherwise be obtained through general course work.  Many of the members attended various conferences/workshops throughout the year and participated in the state SWCS conference.  The club competed in soil judging in Illinois during the fall semester and will compete in Texas at the NACTA soil judging competition in April.  In summary, the 2007-2008 school year has been very productive for both the club and its members.  We intend to assist future student leaders and organization members in ensuring the success of our SWCS student chapter at UW-Stevens Point.
